Peak Oil Primers

  • The Energy Bulletin’s helpful overview of Peak Oil and organizations pursuing positive responses.
  • The Oil Drum’s excellent overview with explanatory graphs and economic commentary.
  • Life After the Oil Crash also has a carefully reasoned, though horrifying, missive on why it will change civilization forever. This site has apparently been mentioned in Congressional hearings, and the writer, Matt Savinar, is a lawyer who appears in the documentary Crude Awakening: Oil Crash.
  • Peak Opportunities gives the best description of Peak Oil I’ve found for dealing with some common stumbling blocks in truly grasping the enormity of the problem.
  • The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler is cited by many as a conversion experience. It was published in RollingStone magazine, possibly around the time of the world’s all-time peak oil production.
  • Eating Fossil Fuels by Dale Allen Pfeiffer is a frightening look at how the way we eat will be forever altered by coming fuel shortages.
  • Peak Oil Debunked is a popular contrarion site that refuses to acknowledge that Peak Oil is imminent. The author seems to be warming up to the idea more and more, but he raises some interesting questions. I do believe it’s important to expose ourselves to ideas we disagree with so we are constantly sharpening our logic and developing empathy for those with whom we disagree.

The Financial Tsunami series by William Engdahl. A fascinating history of the post-WWII US economy leading up to the present financial crisis, and excellent explanation of the seismic economic forces at work today.
